Ultrasonic vs pressure cleaning vs replacement vs deletion.
Four ways to handle a blocked DPF, what each one actually does to your filter, and which one fits which situation.
The short answer
Ultrasonic cleaning uses bursting bubbles to release carbon and ash from every part of the filter, including material stuck to the tube walls. Pressure cleaning pumps liquid through the filter at high pressure – it shifts what it can move, but leaves stuck material behind. Replacement is the dealer’s preferred answer at $4–5k+. Deletion is cheap but has a coming compliance problem with emissions COF.
Ultrasonic vs pressure cleaning – what’s different.
Both methods aim to clear blockage. Both use liquid. The difference is what happens to the material stuck to the inside of the filter.
Pressure cleaning
A liquid is pumped through the filter at high pressure. The pressure pushes whatever is loose out the other end.

- Light surface deposits
What stays behind
- Ash – very inert, accumulates with use
- Asphalt-y residue from modern fuel
- Carbon stuck to the tube walls
Sometimes pressure cleaning gets enough out that the filter can be refitted and the truck driven off. Sometimes it doesn’t. Results are inconsistent on heavy buildup.
Ultrasonic cleaning
Filter sits in a heated bath. Ultrasonic transducers create tiny bubbles in the liquid. The bubbles get into every part of the filter. When they burst, they generate localised heat – that heat releases the stuck material from the filter walls.
What it shifts
- Loose carbon
- Carbon stuck to the walls
- Some of the ash deposits
- Asphalt-y and waxy residue
An honest note
Ash is inert and some of it always remains in the filter structure. Ultrasonics gets out far more than pressure does – but it doesn’t fully strip ash from a heavily loaded filter. The flow pressure proof tells you what you’ve got back.
Three filters that pressure cleaning had failed on were cleaned successfully here. It took longer in the tank than usual.
Cleaning vs replacement.
If the dealer is involved, the conversation usually goes straight to replacement. They’ve been selling spares for a long time. Cleaning isn’t on their radar.

The deletion option – and why it’s a trap.
Some workshops will take a blocked DPF and “delete” it – physically remove it (or gut the internals) and remap the truck’s computer to ignore the missing emissions gear. The truck runs fine. No more warning lights.
It’s cheap. It’s done a lot in the heavy vehicle market and on 4WD modifications. It also hits the truck’s resale value. And it’s about to become a serious problem.
What’s coming
NZTA is moving toward emissions testing as part of the COF/WOF process – the same direction the US, Europe, and most of Asia have already gone. The system measures actual emissions output. A deleted truck will fail.
When that happens, every deleted vehicle either has to be re-fitted with working emissions gear (significantly more expensive than just cleaning the original would have been) or it’s off the road.
There’s a growing market for un-doing deletes – cleaning the original filter, refitting it, restoring the emissions system. We expect this to become a bigger part of our work.
When does each option actually fit?
Different situations call for different decisions. Here’s our honest read.
Cleaning fits when…
- The filter is mechanically intact
- You want the original part back in service
- 2–3 days off the road is acceptable
- Cost matters (most of the time)
Replacement fits when…
- The filter is physically damaged
- The vehicle is under warranty and replacement is funded
- Parts are stocked locally and same-day fitting is critical
Deletion fits when…
- Honestly? Almost never, given coming legislation
- Track-only / off-road vehicles never tested for COF
- If it’s already been done, plan to undo it before COF testing arrives
